Why Even Try if You Have AI?

Philosophy strives to answer the most fundamental questions about the world and our place in it. Now that machines can process information in ways that mimic human reasoning, we face one of those questions: what is epistemic autonomy and does it matter? Why not just let AI do it?

When we can either think through problems ourselves or defer to AI, a tension emerges. This tension between human thought and algorithmic processing is the subject of my research on epistemic autonomy and artificial intelligence.  When is it O.K. to rely on AI? When might it even be better? What are we giving up, what are we winning when we outsource our thinking?

I’m a philosopher and published author teaching in Amsterdam and New York, bridging academic research and public understanding through international talks, podcasts, and publications – from peer-reviewed journals to popular magazines.
